Sound exciters

Post by Paul.nz »

If you didn't know by now i am a music nut.I always have music on and like good sounds when listening to music or watching movies.I put bass shakers in my couch and the same company i brought them from sell cheap sound exciters.I had no idea what they were so i looked into it.A sound exciter is a small speaker which dosn't have a cone but resonates very fast and uses whatever it is stuck on to be the speaker.

Some surfaces sound rubbish but on videos some sound quite good.
I like the look of these.

Since they are very small they need a tiny amp to drive them. They are rated at 10 watts max so i dont think they will stand a chance against the torture my amplifiers will give them. But i have a old set of computer speakers with a small sub so for a test i plan on wiring it to replace the two speakers to these to see how it works. In theory i should be able to connect a mp3 player to it or connect it to my computer.

I have no idea how they sound because i have only seen them on the computer so they may be total rubbish. If they do sound half decent i will make a couple to hang on my bedroom wall. But if they do sound decent i will make a large set for my lounge.I have done some calculations and if i run 4 in series/parrallel arangement i should be able to use them on my old yamaha amp to try.If they survive that next in the firing line will be the 145 watt rms denon.

Here is a setup in a boat. The exciter is stuck to the hull somewhere away from the water and used the hull as a speaker.(this is for you fire)

Clearly these are not for the purists and will not even come close to a medium to high end system.BUT they will be fun speakers inside plastic bottles hanging on your shower rail for music while showering.Stick the tiny things to the underside of your bed and use the bed frame or headboard as a hidden speaker.Stick them to the computer desk and use the desk as the speaker.I plan on trying pizza boxes but i will also be using tweeters.

These little speakers are very expensive though. They are $16.90 usd for two..Yes i know it is beyound by budget but i will work a way around it to get them.
If you have seen them before let me know how they sounded ......

Well i received the exciter speakers and played around a bit.Unfortunatly the plastic sheet i wanted to use was useless so i decided on two cardboard cartons.Basically a box bottom with a 1 inch side.I fitted two exciters to each one and grabbed a old creative computer 2.1 speaker set.I plugged the igniters where the speakers normally went and used the main unit for the sub.I then plugged it into my computer speaker headphone socket.
I am truely amaized at how they sound. They need a small sub for bass but other than that they are fine. They dont go as loud as normal speakers but these are cheap and are just thin panels on the wall.I am testing this set untill i can get some pizza boxes.I plan on painting them white or give to a artist friend of mine to put murals on and hang them from my wall.
Right now they are connected to my bedroom stereo. The bass speakers in each speaker is still working but i have fitted these speakers to replace the mids and highs and now my cheap stereo in my room rocks.
Clearly it dosn't compare with my audio gear in the lounge but in my room it actually sounds great.I havn't used them for tv and movies yet but i will over the next few days.My mate wants me to make him a set for his computer and i will take them to a mates place during the week for him to look at.I can see another order coming on very soon.
