installing serial ata dvd drive help

Post by Theripppa »

I bought a dvd drive for my gf's comp, i got a Sony dru-v200s serial ata, went to install and realized the old dvd drive was ide...so compusa was out of ide drives, so i bought the serial ata cable kit, plugged it all in, and the comp crashes once its booted up. actually same blue screen and hardware error comes up as does when i play spearhead on her comp. If i unplug the cable from the motherboard it wont crash. Now the comp wont reagonize either dvd drive saying cant start hardware cuz config info in registry is damaged or missing?...any suggestions?

I havn't done much with sata but i know it is a pain in the butt.It is strange how it is crashing. To get your old one going you may have to go into install hardware and reinstall your old dvd player drivers but that is not fixing your problem.
Does the pc actually crash once windows has is loading or before windows starts to load.
If the pc crashes when windows is loading i would suspect a driver problem and i would restart the pc into safemode (press f8 when starting the pc). Then uninstall the old dvd drivers from the computer from the add/remove programs then if the pc can see your new dvd drive install the dvd software (obviously the pc must pick up the dvd for this to happen).
I remember when i installed windows on this pc (brand new and empty) i had to install a sata driver before windows would install.Try that and it fails ask sir techno wizzkid (Drifter).

Ps i spoke to sir wizzkid and he brought up a important point. In bios it may be set for ide drives only and not sata so restart the pc and press the delete key to goto bios.Look for a setting which turns on sata eg ide only or ide and sata.
