Widescreen support

I have read a few online tutorials and watched a few youtube videos on how to accomplish this with no success. Basically, it states that you need to go into your unnamedsoldier.cfg and type in the cvars:

seta r_customwidth "3840"
seta r_customheight "2160"

I tried this in the main folder and the mainta folder...... load back into the game and no observable changes have been made. Is anyone out there running a widescreen setup and can confirm this is possible or guide me in the right direction for setting this up correctly.
