The Chiefs hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series after claiming a 1-0 victory over the Americans in the series-opener on Friday night in Kennewick, WA, thanks to Ondrej Roman’s double overtime winner. The Chiefs outshot the Americans 37-24 in Friday night’s series-opener. Spokane is 5-1 on the road so far in the 2008 WHL playoffs, and have allowed only one opposition power play goal on enemy ice.

The teams split the opening two games of the series in Kennewick, WA, on the weekend with both games decided by a 1-0 score in double overtime. The Americans pulled off a 1-0 win over the visiting Chiefs in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Sunday night, with Drew Hoff scoring 4:17 into the second period of extra time. Goaltender Chet Pickard stopped all 45 shots he faced to record his third shutout of the 2008 playoffs, and has allowed just one goal on 115 shots over his last three outings.

CHIEFS BLANK AMERICANS IN GAME THREE -- Ondrej Roman scored his fourth game-winner of the playoffs and Dustin Tokarski made 25 saves to record his third shutout of the post-season as the Spokane Chiefs blanked the visiting Tri-City Americans 2-0 in Game 3 of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship series in the lone Western Hockey League playoff contest on Monday, April 21st.

David Rutherford notched a goal and an assist for the Chiefs, who outshot the visitors 36-25 in the contest, while Judd Blackwater and Seth Compton each drew assists. With the victory, the Chiefs take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Spokane Chiefs lost to the Tri-City Americans 3 - 2 in overtime Tuesday night in game 4 of the Western Conference Championship Series. The loss ties the series at two games apiece.

In the first period the Chiefs got on the board first, with a Mitch Wahl goal, off an assist from Chris Bruton, to make it 1-0 Spokane. It stayed that way until late in the first when Tri-City struck back. Colton Yellow Horn scores his first goal of the series on a power play tying the score 1-1. The Americans' weren't done yet, just 19 seconds later Jarrett Toll scores from just inside the blue line and just like that Tri-City takes a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Bill Peters and the Chiefs respond in the second. On the power play Drayson Bowman beats Chet Pickard. Spokane's first power play goal of the series ties the game at 2. The Chiefs and the Americans play a scoreless third period, so once again they head to overtime for the third time in four games. Kruise Reddick scored the game winning goal for the Americans off an errant pass from Chiefs goaltender Dustin Tokarski, making it 3-2 in overtime. Game 5 in the series is Saturday in Kennewick.

For the fourth time in five games of their Western Conference playoff series, the Spokane Chiefs and the Tri City Americans played into overtime. For the third straight game in Tri Cities, the teams played two overtimes.

For the second time, the Chiefs came out on top, as Judd Blackwater's second goal of the game at 2:28 of the second overtime gave Spokane a 4-3 win over Tri City in game 5 of the Western Finals. Spokane now has a 3 games to 2 lead in the best of 7 series.

Blackwater would stake the Chiefs to an early 1-0 lead on his 4th goal of the playoffs just 1:06 into the game. Chris Bruton and Ondrej Roman picked up the assists. Tri Cities Drew Hoff evened the game at one at 7:24 of the period, as Tri outshot Spokane 16-3 in the period.

The Ams Jason Reese would give Tri Cities a 2-1 lead at 3:17 of the second period. Bowman would counter for Spokane with his 6th of the playoffs at 3:53 on assists from Mitch Wahl and Bruton. Bowman's second of the night, on the power play at 5:13, would give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead after two periods. Spokane outshot Tri 10-7 in the period.

Radek Meidl would tie the game at 3 for Tri at 13:10 of the third period on a net front shot as Tri outshot Spokane 34-23 through regulation.

Neither team scored in the first overtime, as Spokane outshot Tri City 12-9 in the OT. Bowman had a chance to win it for Spokane with a penalty shot with 12:09 left but missed.

Blackwater's second goal of the game came 2:28 into the second overtime on a snap shot from the left wing. Roman and Justin Falk picked up the assists on the game winner.

The Chiefs will return home for Game 6 of their series with the Americans Monday night at 7pm. Mike Boyle will have the call on 1510 KGA beginning with Comcast Hockey Tonight at 6:30pm.

With the victory, the Chiefs take a 3-2 lead over the Americans in the best-of-seven series.

AMERICANS HOST CHIEFS FOR GAME SEVEN -- The Tri-City Americans host the Spokane Chiefs for the seventh and deciding game of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship series in Western Hockey League playoff action on Tuesday, April 29th.

The Americans forced a seventh game of the series with a 2-1 overtime triumph over the Chiefs in Game 6 in Spokane on Monday night. Five of the six previous games of the best-of-seven series were decided in overtime or double overtime.

Ams’ forward Kruise Reddick scored the game-winner on a power play in overtime in Game 6 of the series on Monday for his second extra-time winner of the series. Reddick also scored the overtime winner in Game 4 of the series in Spokane last Tuesday.

Judd Blackwater scored the only goal for the Chiefs in Monday’s Game 6 defeat, and now has three goals in his last two contests after scoring twice, including the extra-time winner, in Saturday’s Game 5 overtime win over the Ams in Kennewick.

Goaltending has been the story through the first six games of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship series. Ams’ netminder Chet Pickard has allowed only 10 goals on 202 shots he’s faced through the first six games of the series, while Chiefs’ goaltender Dustin Tokarski has allowed only nine goals on 180 shots through six games.

The winner of Tuesday’s seventh and deciding game will be crowned the 2008 Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Champion, and meet the MNP WHL Eastern Conference Champion Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 2008 WHL Championship series.

TOKARSKI NAMED KAL TIRE WHL WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES MVP -- Judd Blackwater scored twice, including the go-ahead goal just 16 second into the third period, and Dustin Tokarski made 24 saves to lead the visiting Spokane Chiefs to a 4-1 victory over the Tri-City Americans in Game 7 of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship series on Tuesday, April 29th.

With the win, the Chiefs are crowned 2008 Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Champions, having defeated the Americans four games to three in the best-of-seven series.

Chiefs’ netminder Tokarski was named the Most Valuable Player of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship series.

The 18-year-old from Watson, SK, posted a 4-3 record with two shutouts through the seven-game series, and allowed only 10 goals on 205 shots he faced for a 1.23 goals-against average and a spectacular .951 save percentage in the series.

Tokarski, who is eligible for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, has recorded a 12-2-3 record in 17 appearances during the 2008 WHL playoffs, and has allowed three or more goals on only three of his 17 games.

David Rutherford and Drayson Bowman also scored for the Chiefs in their Game 7, series-clinching triumph over the Americans.

Colton Yellow Horn scored the only goal for the Ams in what would be the final game of an outstanding WHL career. Chet Pickard made 13 saves in a losing cause for the Americans.

Spokane will now face the MNP WHL Eastern Conference Champion Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 2008 WHL Championship series. The winner will capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup and earn a berth at the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament in Kitchener, ONT.


Best-of-seven Series: Spokane Chiefs win series 4-3

Chiefs claimed the Kal Tire Western Conference Championship series 4 games to 3 and advance to the Western Hockey League Finals for the first time in eight years.




Now the quest for Western Hockey League supremacy is down to two teams. The WHL MNP Eastern Conference Champion Lethbridge Hurricanes will meet the WHL Kal Tire Western Conference Champion Spokane Chiefs in the 2008 WHL Championship series.

SPOKANE-4 LETHBRIDGE-1 - CHIEFS TAKE 1-0 LEAD

The Spokane Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Hockey League Championship series with a 4-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night in the Spokane Arena. Drayson Bowman scored twice as the Chiefs outshot the Hurricanes 25-14 and went 2-7 on the power play.

After coming off a seven game bout against the Tri-City Americans in the Western Conference Championship series on Tuesday night, the Chiefs continued their high level of play by scoring 1:32 into the game and outshooting Lethbridge 12-0 in the first period. Bowman’s first was a snap shot wired from the right circle for his team leading ninth of the playoffs.

His 10th came just 47-seconds into the second when he slammed home a rebound of a Chris Bruton shot in the slot. Jared Spurgeon, who was selected as the North Cedar Dental second star, had his second assist on the night. Tyler Johnson scored shorthanded at 11:14 of the period to put Spokane up 3-0.

The Chiefs pushed it to 4-0 when Judd Blackwater scored his ninth of the post-season just 1:30 into the third. Stefan Ulmer and Justin Falk had the helpers on the power play. Dustin Tokarski had 13 saves for the win and made a stop on a penalty shot by Zach Boychuk in the third period.

Adam Chorneyko tallied Lethbridge’s only goal of the game at 15:55 of the third. Spokane and Lethbridge will face off again on Saturday night in the Arena at 7:00 for game two of the WHL Championship Final.

"HIGHLIGHTS"

The Spokane Chiefs took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven WHL Championship Final on Saturday night with a 5-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in front of 7,815 fans in the Spokane Arena.

Games three, four and, if necessary, five will be played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday respectively in Lethbridge next week. All three games can be seen live on Comcast channel 78 at 6:00 each night or heard live on 1510 KGA with the voice of the Chiefs, Mike Boyle.

The Chiefs struck first when Judd Blackwater scored his 10th of the playoffs from below the goal line at 2:04 of the first period. Ondrej Roman’s pass on a two on one was too far out of the reach of Blackwater but the 20-year-old and chased the puck down and flipped it toward the net where it hit Juha Metosla in the pad and banked into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. In 19 playoff games, the Chiefs have scored the first goal of the game in 17 of them and have now won 14 of those.

54-seconds later Mitch Wahl slipped into the left post and tipped a perfect Jared Spurgeon pass from the top of the right circle into the back of the net for a 2-0 Spokane lead.

The Hurricanes thought they had their first of the night at 16:25 when Zach Boychuk beat a Chiefs defenseman to the puck and eventually the net. The goal was disallowed by the WHL’s video replay system as it was ruled that he had “a distinct kicking motion” at the puck. It was the first time in the series that the league used instant replay to review a play.

Lethbridge didn’t have to wait to long after to get their first official of the night when Boychuk tallied at 19:37 and make it a one goal game through 20-minutes.

In the second, Trevor Glass flopped the puck off the left wing boards where David Rutherford’s speed created a mini-breakaway on Metsola. The 20-year-old went to the forehand and slipped it between the post and the goaltender’s pads for a 3-1 lead through two periods.

Boychuk scored his second of the night at 1:11 of the third when he swatted the puck out of the air to make it a one goal game.

Drayson Bowman’s team leading 11th of the post-season gave the Chiefs a 4-2 lead at 3:48 of the third when he blasted a slap shot from the right circle that Metsola couldn’t hang onto with his glove and trickled in over the line. Roman pushed it to 5-2 at 9:21 with his eighth of the post-season.

Spokane outshot the Hurricanes 31-24 and Dustin Tokarski made 22 saves for his 14th win of the post-season.

CHIEFS DOWN ‘CANES IN O/T, TAKE 3-0 SERIES LEAD--The Lethbridge Hurricanes had a strong performance but suffered a 2-1 overtime loss in Game Three of the WHL Championship Final. Rookie Tyler Johnson scored 6:20 into overtime to lift the visiting Spokane Chiefs to a 2-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Game 3 of the 2008 WHL Championship series on Tuesday, May 6th, in Lethbridge, AB.

It was Johnson’s second game-winning goal of the post-season for the Chiefs, who held a 26-23 edge over the Hurricanes in shots on goal in the contest.

With the win, the Chiefs take a commanding 3-0 lead over the Hurricanes in the best-of-seven series, leaving them one victory away from winning the 2008 WHL Championship and the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Chiefs’ captain Chris Bruton – with his third goal of the playoffs – tied the game at 1-1 with only 2:04 left to play in the third period. Dustin Tokarski made 22 saves to record his 15th win of the 2008 playoffs.

Dwight King scored the game’s opening goal in the dying seconds of the second period to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. Juha Metsola made 24 saves in a losing cause for the ‘Canes, who were held scoreless on three power play chances in the contest. The defeat leaves the Hurricanes needing four straight wins in order to claim the 2008 WHL Championship and a spot in the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Kitchener, ONT.

The Hurricanes will host the Chiefs for Games 4 and 5, if necessary, of the 2008 WHL championship series on Wednesday and Friday in Lethbridge, AB.

<B>ROOKIE Tyler Johnson NAMED MVP OF 2008 WHL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES --</B> 17-year-old Tyler Johnson was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 WHL Championship series, having helped the Spokane Chiefs to the 2008 WHL Championship and the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Johnson, in his first WHL season, scored three goals with a +2 rating over the four-game series sweep of the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the WHL Championship series, with two of his three goals being game-winners.

The Spokane, WA, product, playing for his hometown team, scored a shorthanded goal which proved to be the insurance marker in the Chiefs’ series-opening 4-1 victory over the Hurricanes on Friday, May 2nd, in Spokane. He followed up with the overtime game-winning goal in a 2-1 Chiefs triumph in Game 3 of the series in Lethbridge on Tuesday, May 6th. Johnson capped off his tremendous WHL Championship series performance by netting the game-winner in the Chiefs 4-1 win in the Championship-clinching game on Wednesday in Lethbridge.

Johnson has recorded five goals and eight points in 21 games for the Chiefs during the 2008 WHL playoffs. He tallied 12 goals and 35 points in 69 games during the regular season.


<B>Best-of-seven Series: Spokane Chiefs win WHL Championship Series 4-0</B>

The Spokane Chiefs were crowned 2008 Western Hockey League Champions after defeating the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-1 in Game 4 of the WHL Championship series on Tuesday, May 7th, in Lethbridge, AB.

The victory gave the visiting WHL Western Conference Champion Chiefs a 4-0 best-of-seven series win over the WHL Eastern Conference Champion Hurricanes. As the 2008 WHL Champions, the Chiefs claimed the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

The Chiefs are the first U.S.-Based WHL team to win the WHL Championship in 10 years. The Portland Winter Hawks were the last American team to win the WHL Championship in 1998.

Mitch Wahl would stake the Chiefs to a 1-0 lead with his 6th goal of the playoffs at 13:14 of the first period. Wahl would take a home run pass from linemate Drayson Bowman in stride at the Hurricane blue line and snap one past Lethbridge goalie Juha Metsola to give the Chiefs the lead after one. Spokane would outshoot Lethbridge 9-4 in the period.

Tyler Johnson’s third goal of the playoffs gave Spokane a 2-0 lead at 3:37 of the second period. Johnson’s 5th of the playoffs was assisted by Levko Koper and Justin McCrae. Nick Hotson would bring Lethbridge within 2-1 at 5:28 of the period as Spokane was outshot by the Hurricanes 7-6 in the period.

David Rutherford’s power play goal at 2:40 of the third period extended Spokane’s lead to 3-1. Judd Blackwater and Ondrej Roman picked up the helpers on Rutherford’s 9th goal of the playoffs. Roman would cap the scoring with his 9th of the playoffs from assists from Blackwater and Rutherford at 16:08. Spokane outshot Lethbridge 25-18 in the contest.

Chiefs’ goaltender Dustin Tokarski made 17 saves to record his 16th victory of the 2008 playoffs. Juha Metsola made 21 stops for the Hurricanes in the defeat.

The Memorial Cup is contested between the team hosting the event (Kitchener Rangers) and the champions of the three Canadian Hockey Leagues: Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The four teams now played a single round robin (three games each), followed by a semi-final game between the second and third-place teams and a final between the first-place team and the semifinal winner.

As the 2008 WHL Champions, the Spokane Chiefs will compete as the WHL representative at the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament in Kitchener, Ontario.

The 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament kicks off in one week in Kitchener, ON, but there is still one berth in the four-team tournament yet to be decided.

The Western Hockey League crowned its 2008 champion on Wednesday, May 7th, with the Spokane Chiefs completing a 4-0 series sweep of the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the WHL Championship series. As the WHL Champs and Ed Chynoweth Cup winners, the Chiefs will compete as the WHL representative at the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament.

The OHL’s Kitchener Rangers are the host team for the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament and are already guaranteed a berth in the CHL’s Championship tournament. The Rangers are also involved in the 2008 OHL Championship series versus the Belleville Bulls, meaning the Bulls will also be involved in the MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament as either OHL Champions or Runners-up.

The fourth berth is still up for grabs as the Gatineau Olympiques are currently battling the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the 2008 QMJHL Championship series. The winner of the 2008 QMJHL Championship will earn the fourth and final berth in the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament.

<b>2008 OHL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES</b>

The Kitchener Rangers currently hold a 3-2 best-of-seven series lead over the Belleville Bulls in the 2008 OHL Championship series.

The Rangers won the first three games of the best-of-seven series versus the Bulls, but the Bulls have rebounded with a pair of victories, including a 2-1 win in Kitchener on Thursday, May 8th, to bring the series to 3-2.

The Bulls will host the Rangers for Game 6 of the series on Saturday night in Belleville, ON.

Both teams have already earned berths in the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament.

<b>2008 QMJHL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES</b>

The Gatineau Olympiques currently hold a 3-1 best-of-seven series lead over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies through the first four games of the 2008 QMJHL Championship series.

The Olympiques won the series-opener 6-2 while the Huskies claimed a 6-2 win in Game 2, with both games being played in Rouyn-Noranda.

The Olympiques then won both games versus the Huskies in Gatineau, by a combined score of 14-5, leaving them up 3-1 in the series.

The Huskies will try and stave off elimination as they host the Olympiques for Game 5 of the series on Friday, May 9th.

Game 6 of the 2008 QMJHL Championship series, if necessary, will be in Gatineau on Sunday, May 11th.

The Spokane Chiefs have announced that each game of the MasterCard Memorial Cup will be available to all Comcast Subscribers on channel 78 as well as to Comcast Digital Cable Customers with the Sports Tier package on NHL Network channel 419.

The WHL Champion Chiefs will play in the second game of the tournament versus the Belleville Bulls on Saturday, May 17th at 1:00 pm pacific. The tournament will begin on Friday, May 16th at 4:00 pacific with Gatineau from the QMJHL playing the host Kitchener Rangers.

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and Interactive Netcasting Systems Inc. (INSINC) today announced plans to broadcast the entire 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup via the Internet live on a pay-per-view (PPV) broadband basis.

Fans that are not able to watch the television broadcast on COmcast CH. 78, the NHL Network, RSN or RDS will be able to watch the Championship through this unique partnership.
