I use Terragen to make some of the skyboxes for mapping but it has other uses and it's easy to use with a little practice. I like to create environments and then render single pictures, experiment with camera angles, positions, lighting, settings, etc... If I create something I like I render the six view skybox for a 3d game environment /map.

below are some shots I made, It's very soothing hobie if you like that sort of thing and in addition to 3d environments and textures for gaming you can make some cool wallpapers or screensavers too. There are lots of tutorials available on the net or don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
