Europe - Hitler releases directive 16 "Operation Sealion" to gain control of the English channel and eventually he hopes to invade England.

Eastern front - German army encircles Smolensk trapping 300,000 troops and 3,200 tanks
This week in 1942
Politics - Roosevelt and Churchill meet in the US to plan a second front in France.
They agree a Normandy invasion is premature and go with Churchills plan for what is known as "Operation Torch" - the insertion of troops in North Africa.
